What is GEO?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring, writing, and technically optimising website content so that AI-powered search platforms (such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot) can accurately understand, extract, and cite the content when generating answers to user queries. Unlike traditional SEO, which targets search engine rankings, GEO targets direct citation and recommendation within AI-generated responses.

No, GEO and SEO are complementary strategies. Traditional SEO builds the Google rankings and domain authority that LLMs use as training signals, while GEO layers answer-ready content, structured data, schema and entity clarity on top of that foundation to maximize AI citation frequency.
